Principle of decompression distillation
The rotary evaporator's core mechanism is based on reduced pressure distillation technology. The pressure inside the distillation flask is reduced to 400-600 mm Hg by means of a vacuum pump, resulting in a significant reduction in the boiling point of the solvent. For instance, the boiling point of ethanol (78°C at atmospheric pressure) can be reduced to approximately 40°C under a negative pressure of 500 mmHg. This low-temperature evaporation environment is designed to prevent the decomposition of heat-sensitive substances and to enhance the evaporation rate by reducing the latent heat of vaporisation.

Structural innovation
1. Rotating film formation
The flask is rotated at a constant speed of 50-160 rpm, causing the solution to form a continuous liquid film of 0.1-0.5 mm thickness on the inner wall of the flask. This design has been shown to significantly enhance evaporation performance in comparison with static evaporation methods. The evaporation area is expanded by a factor of 3-5, and the heat transfer efficiency is increased by over 20% through the use of water bath heating.
2. The condensation system design
It has been designed to incorporate a double serpentine condenser tube with low-temperature circulating water set at -10 ℃ to -20 ℃. This ensures vapour condensation efficiency of over 98%. The spiral pattern on the inner wall of the condensing tube can further extend the residence time of the vapour to ensure that the target product is completely liquefied and recovered.
3. Sealing system guarantee
The product incorporates a PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) sealing ring and vacuum grease double-sealing structure, which ensures the maintenance of a vacuum degree above -0.098MPa. Experimental data demonstrate that the system has a vacuum decay rate of less than 3% after 24 hours of continuous operation, ensuring the stability of the separation process.
Application Scenarios
- Natural product extraction
In the process of extracting essential oils from plants, rotary evaporators are capable of achieving solvent recovery rates in excess of 95%. For instance, in a laboratory setting, the optimisation of the vacuum (20-50 mbar) and condensation temperature (-15°C) led to a significant reduction in extraction time from rose oil, from 8 hours to 3 hours, while simultaneously enhancing the retention rate to 98%.
- Organic synthesis purification
In the synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates, the equipment is capable of handling high viscosity reaction solutions. By adjusting the rotational speed (80-120rpm) and heating temperature (50-60°C), it achieves over 99% purity of the target product.
- Food industry
The rotary evaporator is an effective tool for concentrating fruit juice, achieving a concentration of 60°Brix while retaining more than 85% of the volatile flavour substances. A company successfully used the technology to reduce energy consumption for orange juice concentration by 40% and increase productivity by threefold.
Optimisation of technical specifications
1. Vacuum degree control
The diaphragm vacuum pump has an ultimate vacuum of up to 2 mbar, which can be adjusted to an accuracy of ±1 mbar in combination with the vacuum controller. This precision avoids the loss of ethanol-water azeotrope (with a boiling point of 78.15°C) at 760 mmHg.
2. Speed Adjustment
The brushless DC motor provides stepless speed regulation from 0-160 rpm, enabling precise control to suit different viscosity materials. For instance, when dealing with a 1000cP polymer solution, a stable liquid film can be formed at 100rpm, with an evaporation rate of 0.5L/h.
3. Heating System
The water bath is capable of temperatures ranging from 20 to 180°C. The PID temperature control algorithm ensures precise temperature regulation with a margin of error of ±0.5°C. This precision ensures that the solvent evaporation rate deviates less than 2% from the theoretical value.
