Collection of Raw Materials: Organic matter such as livestock manure, crop residues, kitchen waste, and other biodegradable materials are collected.

Pre-treatment: Materials may be shredded or ground to increase the surface area for microbial activity. Moisture content is adjusted to around 50-60%, and carbon to nitrogen (C

) ratio is optimized to about 25-30:1 to create an ideal environment for fermentation.

Inoculation: Sometimes specific strains of beneficial microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, or yeast) are added to the organic material to accelerate decomposition and enhance nutrient content.

Aerobic Fermentation: This involves the decomposition of organic matter in the presence of oxygen. It is typically carried out in compost piles or windrows that are turned regularly to ensure adequate aeration.

Anaerobic Fermentation: This process occurs in the absence of oxygen, often in sealed containers or digesters. It produces biogas (mainly methane and carbon dioxide) as a byproduct, which can be captured and used as an energy source.

Temperature Management: During fermentation, the temperature rises due to microbial activity. Maintaining temperatures between 50-60°C (122-140°F) helps kill pathogens and weed seeds, ensuring a safe and stable end product.

Turning and Mixing: Regular turning and mixing of the compost pile ensure even decomposition and prevent the formation of anaerobic pockets that can slow down the process.

Screening and Packaging: The finished compost is screened to remove any large or undecomposed particles. It is then ready for use or packaging for sale.
