The Science Behind Spray Drying

industry spray dryer equipment

At its core, spray drying involves three key stages:

Atomization – The liquid feed is pumped into the drying chamber and broken into tiny droplets using a high-pressure nozzle or rotary atomizer. This creates a large surface area for rapid evaporation.

Drying – Hot air (or another drying gas) is introduced into the chamber, instantly evaporating moisture from the droplets as they travel downward. The temperature and airflow are carefully controlled to preserve product quality.

Powder Collection – The dried particles are separated from the moist air using cyclones or bag filters, resulting in a fine, uniform powder ready for packaging or further processing.
