Application examples of SFE system Technology
Capsaicin Red Pigment
When extracting capsaicin red pigment, the key parameters are extraction pressure, temperature, time and CO₂ flow rate. The optimized parameters are: extraction pressure 25 MPa, temperature 55℃, time 2.5 hours, and CO₂ flow rate 15 L/h. At these parameters, the extraction rate of capsaicin red pigment is the highest.
Extracting plant essential oils
When extracting citrus essential oil, the optimized parameters are: extraction temperature of 50℃, pressure of 20 MPa, CO₂ flow rate of 3 L/min, and extraction time of 1 hour.
Lycopene
Research conducted during the extraction of lycopene using supercritical CO₂ has shown that increasing the pressure and using additives can enhance the extraction efficiency. Moreover, the content of lycopene extracted by supercritical CO₂ is higher than that obtained through traditional solvent methods.
Working principle

The solubility of SFE system for different substances follows the following rules:
(a) Lipophilic and low-boiling-point components can be extracted at pressures below 10 MPa, such as aroma components in natural plants and fruits.
(b) When there are significant differences in the relative volatility or polarity of the components in the mixture, the mixture can be fractionated under different pressures.
(c) The introduction of strong polar groups (-OH, -COOH) makes extraction more difficult. Within the range of benzene derivatives, substances with three hydroxyl groups and phenols, as well as compounds with one carboxyl group and two hydroxyl groups, can still be extracted, but those with one carbonyl group and more than three hydroxyl groups cannot be extracted.
(d) Stronger polar substances, such as sugars, are difficult to be extracted below 40 MPa.
(e) The higher the relative molecular mass of the compound, the more difficult it is to be extracted.
