What are the differences between vacuum drying and ordinary drying?

1.Drying temperature and time

Vacuum drying: In a vacuum environment, the boiling point of water decreases. For instance, when the vacuum degree is 0.09MPa, the boiling point of water can be reduced to approximately 50℃. This enables vacuum drying to be carried out at a lower temperature.

Ordinary drying: Usually, a relatively high temperature is required for moisture to evaporate. For instance, in a hot air circulation oven, the air needs to be heated to a high temperature, which can easily cause damage to heat-sensitive substances and the drying time is relatively long.

2.Drying effect

Vacuum drying: The drying is uniform. The material is heated evenly in a vacuum environment, and the evaporation of moisture is relatively consistent. The quality of the dried material is more stable, and it can also retain the nutritional components, color, aroma and active ingredients of the material

Ordinary drying: The uniformity of drying is relatively poor. There may be temperature gradients in the hot air circulation, resulting in uneven drying of materials. In some areas, there may be over-drying or under-drying situations.

3.Safety

Vacuum drying: Under vacuum or inert conditions, the possibility of oxide explosion upon heating is completely eliminated, making it safer to use. For materials that are prone to oxidation, a vacuum environment can reduce the oxygen content and lower the risk of material oxidation

General drying: When dealing with materials that are prone to oxidation or contain oxides, there is a relatively high risk of oxidation and explosion

4.Energy consumption

Vacuum drying: Although vacuum pumps consume a lot of electricity, low-temperature operation saves more electricity. The actual measurement shows that when drying the same type of material, the vacuum type has a 30% lower comprehensive energy consumption

Ordinary drying: It usually requires a relatively high temperature and a longer drying time, and the energy consumption is relatively high
