The Core Idea: Distance and Vacuum
The key is operating under an extremely strong vacuum – we're talking pressures thousands of times lower than normal atmosphere. This dramatically lowers the boiling point of the material. Crucially, the heated surface where evaporation happens and the cooled surface where condensation occurs are placed very close together, often just centimeters apart. At this ultra-low pressure, vapor molecules travel in straight lines without bumping into each other. Because the condenser is so close, they fly directly from the hot surface to the cold surface and immediately turn back into liquid.

 

Main Parts of the Molecular distillation system

 

Evaporator: A heated surface where the feed material is spread into a very thin film. A common type is the Wiped Film Evaporator (WFE), which uses rotating wipers to spread viscous materials thinly and evenly, ensuring quick heating and minimizing the time the material spends at high temperature.

Condenser: A cooled surface positioned just a short distance ("short path") from the evaporator. This is where the vapor molecules directly condense.

Vacuum System: The heart of the operation. Powerful multi-stage pumps create and maintain the intense vacuum needed. This is essential for lowering boiling points and enabling the direct molecule travel.

Heating System: Precisely heats the evaporator surface.

Cooling System: Cools the condenser surface.

Feed System: Pumps the material onto the evaporator at a controlled rate.

Collection Vessels: Separate containers for the purified distillate (what condenses) and the leftover residue.

Controls: Monitor and manage temperature, vacuum level, feed rate, and cooling.

No Additives Needed: Separation relies purely on vacuum and temperature, no steam or carrier gases are required.
